RADAR Receives Major Backing from Baltimore
Community Foundation
The pilot project for RADAR, Baltimore's
new monthly arts review, has achieved
a substantial milestone in its search
for underwriting through a grant from
the Baltimore Community Foundation, which
is expected to extend the reach of the
new publication through additional distribution
outlets and a larger print run. The Greater
Baltimore Cultural Alliance, co-publishers
of the review and coordinator of the development
effort, announced the sponsorship to RADAR
staff late last week.
The Baltimore Community Foundation, one
of the largest charitable foundations
in Maryland, is made up of more than 290
different charitable funds, with a total
of $17 million in grants distributed last
year. BCF supports efforts in a broad
array of interest areas aimed at improving
the region's quality of life, including
the arts. For the last two years, BCF's
arts and culture funding priorities have
been geared toward promoting cultural
tourism in Baltimore. BCF support of RADAR
will increase expected circulation to
10,000 copies per issue. The pilot project
for RADAR, edited by Jack Livingston and
David Crandall, will be a "proof
of concept" project aimed at demonstrating
to the public, media, government and other
institutions the wealth of arts activities
to be found at all levels across Baltimore.
RADAR, a free, pocket-sized publication,
will feature brief reviews of current
art, music, dance, and performance offerings
by artists, writers, and others from the
local scene. Current plans call for production
of the review in mid-May, late July, and
mid-September of this year; further production
will then be evaluated. In addition to
the important BCF sponsorship, additional
funding is being raised through advertising
sales and in-kind support from many of
Baltimore's cultural and arts organizations,
both large and small.
